How to Put on a Duvet Cover
Do you feel like you’re wrestling with your bed every time you wash your duvet cover? Ever wonder how to put on a duvet cover without breaking a sweat? I’m going to teach you our (SUPER) simple trick for getting it back on in two minutes or less – it’s a breeze!
Do you have those tasks in your home that feel impossible? You know, the tiny little tasks that should (in theory) take minutes but you feel like they take hours? For me, that was always putting the duvet cover back on our bed. There was something about it that just felt hard.
Thankfully, a few years back I learned a trick that makes it really easy. I can even put the king duvet back on my bed without a struggle. Alone! It’s a game-changer and I’m here to teach it to you!
So, grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair, and prepare to have your mind blown because today I’m teaching you how to put a duvet cover on your duvet in two minutes or less.
Before we learned this handy little trick, Corey and I had many a marital spat thanks to making the bed after we wash the linens. I was pretty much incapable of putting the duvet cover back on (it’s so big and I’m so small!) and he absolutely hated doing it. If he had it his way, we would never have washed our duvet cover just to avoid putting it on.
But! Now that we know this trick, it’s a breeze to put our duvet cover back on and there are no more fights. It’s lovely. I can do it by myself in a pinch, but if Corey’s around we’re able to get the whole thing knocked out in about a minute or so. Literally – 60 seconds. It’s amazing.

Here’s How to Put On a Duvet Cover – The Traditional Method
There are two methods I’m going to teach you here today. The first one is the pretty traditional way to put a duvet cover back on your bed – and I think it’s the easiest way to go! After this, I’ll tell you the California Roll way. I think it’s a little harder, but some people prefer it!
STEP ONE:
Take the duvet insert and spread it out on your bed, just as if you were making the bed normally.
STEP TWO:
Flip your clean duvet cover inside out and lay it out on top of the insert. Make sure the open end of the duvet cover is at the bottom, and try to line up the corners as best as you can.
STEP THREE
If you have them, go ahead and tie the interior corner ties of the duvet cover to the duvet itself. If not, and you’re looking for an easy way to keep your duvet cover’s corners in place here are a few options:
HOW TO KEEP YOUR DUVET IN PLACE
- Add small safety pins on each corner to hold the corners in place.
- Try adding these comforter clips to the corners of your bed – we haven’t tried them, but I’m seriously tempted!
- Sew small strips of ribbon or fabric in each corner of the duvet cover – then, simply tie them to the corners of your duvet before inserting it.
STEP FOUR:
Now, reach your arms into the duvet cover and grab the corners of the duvet. I like to start at the bottom of the bed and flip those corners the right way out. Then, I reach all the way to the top of the duvet cover and grab those corners. I pull them out of the opening of the duvet enclosure so that all four corners are out.
Then, grab two of the corners on one side and fluff! As you fluff the duvet (use some force here!) it’ll naturally pull the rest of the duvet into the cover. If you have a partner working with you, you can each grab two corners and do it all at once. If you’re working alone, just do one side at a time.
As I work, I go around to the top of the cover, the right side, the foot of the bed, and the left side, giving it a good shake on all sides as I go.
STEP FIVE:
Once you’ve got it all settled, you’re ready to zip it up! Head down to the duvet cover opening and closet it up with whatever method is on your duvet cover. Then, spread it all out, put the pillows back on the bed, and you’re good to go.
The California Roll Method
The California Roll method, also called the Burrito Method, is another really simple way to put your duvet cover back on.
Here’s a breakdown of how this works:
- You’ll start the same way – turn your duvet cover inside out and lay it on top of the duvet. Tie the loops on the bottom and top corners so everything is secure.
- Instead of just grabbing the corners, roll up the duvet, starting at the end opposite the opening of the duvet. Roll it nice and tightly, like a little sushi roll.
- Once you reach the bottom, grab one end of the roll and tuck it inside the duvet using the opening. Stuff the entire thing inside, working from one end to the other.
- Now, zip or button it up.
- Start unrolling! It will be a slight mixture of unrolling and fluffing as you go.
- After fully unrolling, do a bit of adjusting and you should be good to go!
I can’t overemphasize to you how excited I am about this trick and how much time (and how many headaches) it has saved us! We feel like high-fiving each other every time we make our bed now, and every time we do it we’re in awe all over again of how simple it is.
We’ve used this trick with several different duvet inserts and duvet covers over the years, and it works equally well with all of them! We prefer duvet covers that have ties already attached to them to help hold everything into place once you’ve put it on, but with the tricks I shared above, you shouldn’t have an issue keeping your duvet cover in place.
Is your mind blown? Or am I the only one who didn’t already know this trick??
I am so confused. do you have a video?
Can you CLEAN My HOME ?
Fabulous! This is the best trick I’ve ever come across!

Cute! Great tip about laying it out inside-out and tackling it that way. Thanks for the post!

Duvet covers can be so tricky, but this is a great tutorial!
Glad it’s helpful, Courtney! We used to get SO frustrated every time we washed ours!
