It’s not Thursday, but it’s time for a little throwback…
You may or may not know this about us, but Corey and I were high school sweethearts.
Look! Senior prom!
Last Friday marked 10 years of dating for us. Ten years! I’ve been with this man for over a third of my life. Absolutely crazy. I’ve shared so much of our marriage with you all throughout the years (heck, I blogged about our entire wedding from planning to honeymoon!) but I’ve never really shared much about “the early years.” So, when I was asked to write a post about the new Nicholas Sparks movie, The Choice, and share about my own love story, I absolutely could not pass up the opportunity.
But before I get started, let’s talk about The Choice. Just for a minute. I promise the good stuff is coming (and more embarrassing photos. You don’t want to miss those). I just finished reading the book; when I was asked to write this post, I added it into my list of books to read for 2016, and I’m so glad I did. I’ve always been a sucker for a good Nicholas Sparks book (who doesn’t love A Walk to Remember?) and I haven’t read one in years.
I’ve been seeing the previews for the new movie for a while now, and I’ve been curious about it, so I grabbed the book a couple of weeks back and I absolutely devoured it over the course of two days. Seriously. Two. Days. I have a toddler, people. That means it’s almost impossible to finish a book at all, much less in two days. So, um, I think that means I enjoyed it. I felt particularly connected to it because it’s all about young love, falling hard and fast, and following your heart even when people think you’re crazy. Plus, there’s a serious theme of dogs bringing people together, and goodness knows Corey and I love our dogs! The movie comes out February 5th (this Friday!) and I am super excited to watch it – I’m always down for a good girlie movie, and this one will not disappoint.
So, our story?
Corey and I met my sophomore year in high school (he was a freshman). We were friends for a little over a year before we started dating, but he claims he was in love with me from the moment we met. We had geometry class together and every day he would “forget” his glasses in another class so that he could sit at the front with me. He would then spend the entire class drawing on my paper and kicking my shoes off. He claims he was flirting, but I was kind of annoyed by the curly-haired kid who wouldn’t leave me alone. I will admit, though, I always thought he was pretty cute!
We became pretty fast friends – it’s hard not to when you go to a tiny school and have most of your classes together. He made me laugh every single day, and it wasn’t long before I stopped being annoyed by his antics and started to be charmed by them. We had been friends for a little over a year when we both decided to do the One Act Play for our school. That year the play was Into the Woods and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t try out for my character partially because I would get to share an onstage kiss with Corey! After lots of long rehearsals and faux-kissing onstage, we were outed to the entire cast one day when our director shouted out “Oh my gosh! They’re actually kissing!” during one of our rehearsals.
Oh, and my mom was there.
It was awesome.
Oh my gosh, we were babies!
We were pretty much inseparable for the rest of high school – we fell for each other hard and fast and I knew pretty quickly he was the one for me. Two years later, I left for college at Texas A&M. It was only two and a half hours from where we grew up, but when you’re 18 years old that’s practically cross-country! We saw each other a few times a month and talked on the phone constantly. Corey liked to drive up on the weekends and surprise me, and I came home whenever I could. He joined me in College Station a year later, and my memories of the next few years in that tiny little town are some of my absolute favorites. We had the full college experience together, we grew up a lot, and we learned how to be adults side-by-side.
Pretty quickly after Corey started college, we adopted our first dog together, and a year later we adopted another one. Yes, we were those crazy people in a second-story apartment with two dogs (one of which was a Labrador, so, um, not tiny dogs). Our neighbors loved us.
We dated all throughout college and in 2009 we got engaged. He proposed on our first vacation together (it was a cruise – of course!) and it was so magical. I had no idea it was coming, and it was so fun to come back from our vacation and tell everyone we were getting married. We had a nice long engagement since we were both still in college, and in January of 2011 we tied the knot. And, if you’ve been around here for a while like I know a lot of you have, you know more details about than you ever wanted to know, so I’ll spare you!
Call me a sap, but there’s something about sweet, romantic stories that make me oh-so grateful for my own love story. Maybe I’ll be able to talk Corey into going to see the new Nicholas Sparks movie with me for a Valentine’s Day date!
Okay, I’m feeling sentimental now – what’s your love story?
