Let’s be real for a minute – our master bedroom has been a hot mess for a long time now.
It’s evolved so many times over the few years that we’ve lived here, and it really fell into a state of complete and utter chaos for a while there. It was easy to ignore because it’s not a room that people really see when they come over, and we don’t spend a ton of time hanging out in there (maybe because it’s so awful looking?) so it just fell on the back burner. Why would I work on the room that I sleep in when I could work on the rooms that I spend the rest of my time in?
I know. Dumb move. I’m learning my lesson.
It’s been bothering me for a while now and I’ve really been wanting to do something to spruce up our bedroom and make it feel a little more like the retreat it should be. So, one day on a whim I asked Corey if he’d be okay with me selling the mid-century dresser we’ve had in there since we moved in to replace it with something bigger and a bit more fitting for our needs. He was fine with it, so within a few days the old dresser was gone and we had a newer, (much) bigger one from Ikea in its place.
This is the Ikea Hemnes dresser and it is so much more well-suited to the direction we want to go in this room – plus, I can’t deny that the extra space is awesome! It’s not perfect yet…we want to replace the drawer pulls, but we don’t want to rush into anything and are living with it for a while before we make any decisions.
Another major change in here is that we finally got a new bedside table for Corey’s side of the bed. For what feels like forever, he’s had an old one that we bought at a garage sale forever ago and it has looked horrible paired with mine. We got this one from my grandmother’s house and it’s a perfect fit. It’s similar to the bedside table we had on my side (we switched them up once we brought it home because the new one is a little bigger), but not perfectly matched (which is exactly what we wanted) and it looks so much better in here. We still need to replace the drawer pulls, but I can live with them for now. Next up on the agenda for this part of the room are new lamps (I’m thinking wall-mounted!) and new artwork for above the bed.
Oh, and did you notice my bedding?
How could you not?
Our poor little bed has been through many wardrobe changes over the years. We’ve had a hard time finding the right duvet cover that can live up to the chaos of dogs and kids (and us!) and I think we’ve finally found a winner. There’s not a lot of white space (which gets dirty so quickly), it’s sturdy and well-made (so we won’t get any holes!) and it’s so pretty that sometimes I just stare at it lovingly while stroking it.
I particularly love our monogrammed throw blanket. And that crazy soft fuzzy pillow. DROOL.
Our room is far from the relaxing retreat that it needs to be. Our to-do list in here is still about a mile and a half long, but these few little changes have made a big difference for me.
Maybe one of these days I’ll actually get curtains in my room?
A girl can dream.
But, I’m curious – what does your master bedroom look like? Is it restful and wonderful or a bit of a mess like mine?
