Okay, maybe life-changing is a bit dramatic. But maybe not.
But, you know how there are always a few little, random things in your life that drive you absolutely insane, even though they aren’t really that big of a deal?
For me, it’s this:
An overflowing utensil caddy in the kitchen. Oh my goodness, y’all – I get so angry at this thing. Corey and I are big on cooking and we have a ton of different things that we like to keep out and easy to grab – which makes for a very full caddy. And every time we go to pull something out of it, half of the other things fall out, or the whole thing just falls over.
And when we do dishes and have to put things away?
Biggest pain ever.
I know it’s such a little and trivial thing, but it’s just one of my pet peeves and I get so worked up over how awful it is to try to squeeze everything into a tiny, traditional utensil caddy.
So, needless to say, Corey and I have been working on finding a replacement for this guy for a while. Every chance we get, we check out the utensil holders at various stores to see if there is anything a bit bigger. But, apparently we’re the only ones who have a ton of kitchen tools, because this is the largest size they make. So, of course, we decided to think outside the box. We started to look for other containers or holders that could work for all of our utensils, but it’s not easy to find something that’s large, cute, and actually could function well enough to hold all of our utensils.
We weren’t having much luck until we were at our favorite place in the world, Ikea, and found this cute little wine chiller for some ridiculously low price – I think it was $10.00? I can’t find it on their website, but I know it was cheap! We decided it was worth a shot, so we tossed it into our cart and headed on our merry way.
As soon as we got home and put all of our kitchen tools in it, it was almost like I could hear angels singing.
Everything fits! And there’s even some extra room for more! And it’s not overflowing! And it actually looks good!
I’m in love. This was huge for me, and every time I cook I’m reminded again how nice it is to have a utensil holder that actually holds everything. It’s perfect.
But, of course, you know me – I couldn’t leave it as it was. It needed a little something extra. So, this weekend I had Corey cut down an old piece of wood that was painted with chalkboard paint (we used it at our wedding as a menu), and I grabbed some twine and chalk and made myself a little label.
All I did was write “Tools” on it and strung the twine through the holes that Corey drilled for me. Then I just wrapped it around the bucket, tied a knot, and plopped it back into place!
It took about five minutes to throw this together and, since I already had all of the materials on hand, was completely free. My favorite kind of project!
I love having something a bit roomier to hold all of our kitchen tools, and the cute little label makes the plain stainless steel bucket a little more special – and I love that it’s totally not permanent, so if I ever get tired of it and want to go back to the simple look, it’ll be as easy as untying a knot!
What are some tiny things in your life that drive you crazy?
