I don’t even know how long it’s been, but for years (seriously, years) I’ve yearned for one of those gorgeous, tall, arched lamps. You know the ones – they’re always placed in urban-y lofts and they look ridiculously chic.
Sigh. So beautiful.
And so expensive. If you know me at all, you know I’m not the type to EVER spend $200+ on a lamp, and I couldn’t find a single one of these beauties that was anywhere near a price I was willing to pay.
Until last weekend.
Corey and I had made the (oh so long but oh so worth it) trek out to West Elm to exchange a birthday gift that we didn’t want, and as we were browsing the store trying to decide what amazing new goodies we would be bringing home with us, we spotted the perfect lamp.
It was smaller than a lot of the other arched lamps we’d seen, which we liked. Most of the ones we’ve come across are super tall, and with our (super short) couch, it just wouldn’t work at all. We loved the industrial look, and the shiny silver finish.
And what we loved most of all? The fact that it had been a return, so it was on sale. A big one. As in, we would be paying $60 for a $170 lamp. SCORE!
We waffled back and forth on if we would get it – the switch to turn it on sits on the floor, which means that until we get a new cord for it, we have to walk around the couch to turn the lamp on. We didn’t like the inconvenience of that, but in the end we decided it was absolutely worth it, especially since the cord can be easily changed.
We brought our new beauty home and plopped in into place, and we knew we’d made the right choice.
My favorite place in the whole house to read has always been the corner of our couch – I love to curl up there with a good book and a blanket, and now that I have this lamp it’s even more enjoyable. We love the impact it makes in the room, and I smile every time I see it!
We also made a few other small updates, such as a new pillow and throw blanket from Target.
As you know, we’ve been trying to bring a bit more color into our living room, and after we added the purple birds to our mantle, we knew we wanted some more purple. I had heard about the “rule of threes” with new colors – if you are adding a new color to a room, add it in at least three different places to make it look cohesive – and we decided to try it out with purple. With our new pillow and throw blanket, we’ve got three nice little pops of purple, and we were surprised by how well the color integrated into the room once we hit that magic number. I’m definitely not the type to strictly adhere to any sort of design rules – I like what I like, and that’s about the only rule I know – but this one definitely made a difference for us, and we’ll probably try it again in the future.
We’re so excited to finally be getting some color into our living room! You may have noticed that I didn’t take any wide shots of the whole room for this post, and there’s a very good reason for that. I’ll be back tomorrow with an update on a much bigger way we’ve added color into the living room – I can’t wait to share!
Have you ever tried the “rule of threes”? Do you have a super expensive lamp you’re lusting after?
