Growing up, I always remember my mom joking that she could be Ellie Mae Clampett from The Beverly Hillbillies. If you’ve seen the show, you’ll know that Ellie Mae had a penchant for lost animals and would frequently bring them home, causing all sorts of shenanigans around the Clampett home.
Of course, my mom never actually followed through with any of her jokes – we never had more than two (very small) dogs and a cat at once, and the cat spent most of her time outside. The animals in our house never outnumbered the humans, and they always remained small so as not to create too much chaos in the house.
Oh, I could totally be Ellie Mae. We already have two dogs (one of which is about 65 pounds of nothing but energy) and I’m seriously longing for another animal. Or two.
You’d think two sweet, loving dogs would be enough for me…
I mean, who could possibly need more than that, right?
But, um, I want a cat.
I grew up with a pet cat, and she was very dear to me. She was very independent and spent much of her time outside, but she slept with me almost every night, and was always sure to get in my way when I was trying to work on homework. When she passed away a few years ago, I was devastated.
I’m definitely a dog person when it comes down to it, but there’s just something about a pet cat that makes my heart happy. So, Corey and I fully plan to get a cat within the first few months of moving into our new house.
So, three animals for two people, that’s not too bad, right?
Except, Corey desperately wants another dog. A bullmastiff, to be specific. You know, the ones that usually weigh well over 100 pounds? Yeah, those.
But they sure make for some cute puppies!
Usually, when Corey brings up getting a bullmastiff I tell him he’s crazy. I mean, THREE dogs? Two of them being large dogs? Totally not gonna happen.
But every once in a while, when the animal lover in me is feeling particularly sentimental, I think maybe it wouldn’t be too terrible. A house full of animals could be fun, right?
No? Just me?
In all reality, I know we won’t end up with a third dog. It’d be entirely too much work, and waaaay too much chaos for me to handle. Plus, I’m sure it’s probably not the best idea to have two giant dogs running around with the (way far in the future) babies that we (may or may not) have.
There will always be times where I dream of giving in to my Ellie Mae urges and having a ton of animals. But for now, I’ll just be happy with my dogs.
And, ahem, a kitten. (Corey – you listening?)
How many animals do you have? Do you want tons and tons like me, or are you happy with just one or two?
