This past weekend, Corey and I headed out to good ol’ Corpus Christi, Texas for a weekend at the beach with my sister and her family.
Corpus isn’t exactly a prime vacation location, but we don’t have any other summer vacations lined up and we wanted a chance to get away at least once before the summer was up.
When we were there, Corey and I had quite a revelation about the way we like to vacation.
We decided that normal book-a-hotel-and-go-somewhere vacations are not for us. Oh no. We’re vacation-in-a-can people.
What do I mean by that?
Basically, and type of all-inclusive vacation is the vacation for us. We like the kind of vacation where you book it, show up, and RELAX. No more decisions other than what kind of drink you want to sip on while you lounge by the pool.
I know this seems kind of random, but let me explain how and why we came to this conclusion, and maybe you’ll understand a little bit better.
When we were planning our trip to Corpus, we didn’t do a lot of actual planning. We booked the hotel, we decided we wanted to go to the aquarium while were there, and that was it. We didn’t really put much thought into what we would eat, or what else we would do while we were there. It can’t be that difficult, right?
Oh. My. Goodness. Figuring out where to go eat in a place where you don’t know any of the restaurants is not my idea of a good time on a vacation. We chose one restaurant because of the rave reviews on Yelp, only to show up and realize that 1) they do not accept credit cards or debit cards, 2) nothing on the menu costs less than $20 dollars, 3) there is an EIGHT DOLLAR CHARGE to split entrees, and 4) a coke (from a can, no less) costs almost four dollars. Oh and 5) the food wasn’t even good.
Corey and I split a meal, did not enjoy it at all and left feeling still hungry, and slightly like we had just been robbed.
It was when we were on our way back to the hotel after this particularly disastrous meal that we realized how much we’d rather be on a cruise. There is so much about it that is just easier. When we were on this “vacation” I never truly felt relaxed. I was constantly worrying about how much money the next meal was going to cost, if we were going to enjoy it, and where in the world we were going to choose to eat. On an all-inclusive vacation, I don’t have to worry about any of these things. I just show up and eat.
Now, my definition of vacations-in-a-can does not just include cruises. It would also include something like a trip to Disneyworld, if you stayed in a hotel that is on the park grounds, or a trip to an all-inclusive resort. You book a big ol’ package, show up, and you’re done. No more tough decisions.
That’s my kind of vacation.
This revelation may not seem like a big deal, but it was actually pretty exciting for Corey and I.
I have always wanted to put a priority on vacations and traveling in our budget, and I always kind of figured that a good portion of those vacations would be the typical hotel-type vacations (not just cruises and other all-inclusive vacations) but now I realize that that’s just not what I want. I don’t enjoy those types of vacations nearly enough, and it’s silly for me to spend money on them when I could just go on a cruise instead.
Part of me always thought that if we stuck to cruises and other all-inclusive vacations only, we would feel like we were missing out on something. The “traditional” vacation, if you will. But after this weekend, I don’t feel that way anymore. I want to take the type of vacations that make me happy, and who cares if I’m missing out. If we’re happy and relaxed, that’s all that really matters.
Now, this revelation absolutely doesn’t mean that we’ll never take a traditional vacation again. I just think it will probably be the exception to the rule. We’ll take typical vacations to go visit friends who live in other states, or to go see things that we just can’t see with an all-inclusive vacation, but I have to admit that there was something very freeing about finally admitting that I’m just not a fan of the traditional vacation set-up.
But now, I want to hear your opinion. What type of vacation do you like to take? And, if you prefer to take the traditional style vacation rather than going all-inclusive, I’d love to hear why, and maybe even get some tips on how to make it easier!
